NEMT Stretcher Policy Notice

The Department of Community Health's Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) program requires ALL Medicaid-enrolled providers benefitting from NEMT services to comply with the policies and procedures established for stretcher transportation services. Healthcare providers ARE NOT allowed to treat members on the transportation provider's stretcher. The NEMT Broker's responsibility is to transport and transfer the member to an awaiting bed, table, etc., at the healthcare facility. At no time shall the healthcare provider prohibit the transportation provider from retrieving their stretcher, nor require the broker to remain at a facility once the member has arrived at their destination.
Please be advised of the following:

1. The NEMT Brokers contract with independent transportation providers to transport members to and from their medical appointments.
2. Stretcher providers are responsible only for the transportation and the uploading of members to an awaiting bed, table, etc. at the healthcare facility.
3. Stretcher providers ARE NOT allowed to remain with the member at the treating facility once delivered nor are they allowed to leave their equipment/stretcher.
4. The healthcare provider SHALL NOT treat the member on the transportation provider's stretcher.
5. Any additional requirements, including the availability of stretchers or other accessible medical equipment required by the healthcare provider to meet the needs of patients are the sole responsibility of the treating healthcare provider/facility.
6. Medicaid-enrolled providers who fail to comply with the aforementioned directives may face disciplinary action up to and including termination from the Georgia Medicaid program.
